U-19: Ukraine finishes fourth after loss to England in Marbella tournament
Today, October 14, Ukraine’s U-19 national team (players born no earlier than 2006) concluded their participation in a four-team tournament in Marbella as part of their preparation for the EURO 2025 qualification.
The competition was played in a knockout format, with three of the participating teams featuring U-18 players.
In the semifinals, Sweden defeated England 2:0, while Netherlands edged Ukraine 1:0. As a result, today the Blue and Yellows faced the British side in the third-place match.
England opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Olusesi finished off a team move. In response, Synchuk missed two good chances for Ukraine. Later, Olusesi doubled the lead by heading in a cross. In the 36th minute, Ukraine reduced the deficit when Shershen played the ball forward, Synchuk controlled it, cut inside, and curled a great shot into the far corner. Before halftime, Ponomarenko’s shot on target also threatened England.
Early in the second half, both teams exchanged off-target shots through Dipepa and Osypenko. In the 63rd minute, Shevchenko came close to scoring, but the goalkeeper saved his effort from close range. Later, the English keeper again denied Lomaha and Synchuk. Towards the end of the match, Golambekis scored from a corner to secure a 3:1 victory for the British side.
It’s worth noting that Netherlands won the tournament, defeating Sweden 2:1 in the final.
