    After independence, Ukraine created its own national team which played its debut match in 1992 against Hungary.

    The team consistently competed in World Cup and European Championship qualifiers. In 2006, Ukraine qualified for its first World Cup.

    After success in Germany, the team underwent a generational change. Andriy Shevchenko became a symbol of a new era in Ukrainian football.

    Ukraine co-hosted the 2012 European Championship with Poland.
