Here is the transcript of a pre-match press conference with the head coach of Ukraine's U-19 national team, Dmitry Mykhaylenko, ahead of their first match in Euro 2026 (U-19) against Croatia.

— Do you set the goal of qualifying for the World Cup based on Euro 2026 results?

— We want more than just to qualify for the World Cup. We want to gain experience playing at the highest level against some of Europe's best teams. We would like to enjoy this tournament, as we know that feeling from two years ago when we reached the semifinals.

We understand that all teams in the group are very evenly matched and have equal chances of reaching the semifinals. We need to be confident, strong, believe in ourselves and each other to achieve our goals. So first and foremost, we must believe in ourselves.

— And put the results on the back burner?

— Exactly. We are convinced that when we play well and stick to our philosophy and playing style, we achieve what we want.

— What is the philosophy of your team?

— We want to play football. We want to dominate the field, we want to control the ball and most importantly, develop our players.

— Your first match is against Croatia. What will be the challenge in this game?

— We had enough time to analyze Croatia. We know that it is a very strong team with great attacking players, so we need to be solid in defense and control the game. I hope we will surprise them.

— The captain of your team is Kyrylo Dytchyar. What do you like about him?

— Leadership first. We have several boys capable of being leaders in the team. I think at every stage of the game. We have a great goalkeeper, solid defenders and two very strong forwards — each one can be a leader on the field.

— What do you think about the Serbian team?

— This is a very short tournament. We have already analyzed Serbia as well, but I think we will get more information after their first match against Italy. So we will take it step by step and learn more about our opponent.

— What impressions did Wales leave on you?

— Well, to be honest, it is a wonderful country. The journey here took us about an hour. It is a beautiful country with amazing nature and very hospitable people, so we are happy to be here.

Two years ago we were already in the UK, in Northern Ireland, so we are familiar with this hospitality and have experienced firsthand how welcoming people are here.

I would also like to say that we are very proud and consider it an honor to be here representing our country, especially in these difficult times when there is a war in Ukraine. For us, being here is a great honor.

We spent two weeks preparing in Poland, so I think we are very well prepared and all players are fit.
