President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation and spoke about the victims of the despicable missile strike by occupiers on Odessa and the inevitable accountability of military war criminals before the law.
"Today I will begin my evening address to you without a greeting."
"Today Russia launched another missile attack on Ukraine, targeting Odessa. As of now — eight fatalities. At least 18 injured. Ordinary civilians. Among the victims — a three-month-old baby girl. What threat did she pose to Russia? It seems that killing children is simply a new national idea for the Russian Federation."
The strike was carried out by Russian strategic aviation from the Caspian Sea region. We managed to shoot down two of the missiles. Another five rockets hit the peaceful city, including an ordinary residential building and a multi-story apartment complex.
We will identify everyone responsible for this attack. Those who give these orders. Those who carry them out. No one will be able to hide. Regardless of how long it takes us, all those involved will answer for each death they caused.
Russia has already fired most of its missile arsenal at Ukraine. Of course, they still have missiles left. Certainly, they can continue their missile terror against our people. But what they've done so far is enough evidence for the world to finally recognize the Russian state as a sponsor of terrorism and the Russian army as a terrorist organization. We will insist on this in further negotiations with our partners. There are no alternatives to such recognition. Therefore, it's the truth.
The Russian state has become a terrorist, and they're not ashamed of it. If they're not ashamed, then it's deliberate. Hence, there must be maximum accountability.
New facts about crimes by occupiers against our Mariupol residents are being revealed. New burial sites for those killed by the occupiers are being established. It concerns tens of thousands of deceased Mariupol residents. Conversations between occupiers on how to hide traces of their crimes are being recorded.
Russia continues to support so-called filtration camps, particularly near Mariupol. Although an honest name for them is actually different — these are concentration camps. Such as those the Nazis built at one time.
Ukrainians from these camps — those who survived — are being sent further to occupied territories and into Russia. There are documented cases of our citizens being deported deep into Russian territory, Siberia, even Vladivostok. Children are also being deported, hoping they will forget where their home is, where they come from. But they're from Ukraine.
Today was Great Saturday for Eastern Orthodox Christians. The day between crucifixion and resurrection. It seems that Russia has become stuck in such a day. For years. In the day when death reigns triumphant, as if God is absent.
But resurrection will come. Life will triumph over death. Truth will overcome any lie. And evil will be punished. And Russia will have to relearn these truths; it's just a matter of time. It's only a matter of time before all Russian killers feel what a fair response is for the crimes they've committed. It's only a matter of time until we can return all deported Ukrainians home. It's only a matter of time until everyone on our land feels what true peace means.
I spoke today with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. I informed him about the situation in Mariupol and other conflict zones. I thanked him for significant military and financial support for Ukraine. We coordinated further steps necessary to defend our freedom.
We are also preparing for tomorrow's important talks with American partners.
I held a large press conference in Kyiv today, live on air. I answered many questions — from various journalists, both Ukrainian and foreign. And this is not just about openness truly. Not just about information. This is about which side the truth is on in war. It's about who can speak honestly to their people and the whole world. Ukrainians can. Our enemies cannot.
I am grateful to every one of our defenders, every defender who gives us security tonight before Easter and always. Who defend the state. Who fight for freedom for Ukrainians.
Eternal glory to all our warriors!
Eternal memory to all those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
Glory to Ukraine!">
