Futsal World Cup 2024: Ukraine defeats Venezuela to reach the semifinals

In their fifth FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024 final tournament match, Ukraine's futsal team secured a quarterfinal victory over Venezuela.

During the group stage, our team initially lost to Argentina (1:7) but then triumphed over Angola (7:2) and Afghanistan (4:1). Finishing second in their group, the blue and yellows advanced to the Round of 16, where they defeated the Netherlands (3:1). In the quarterfinals, Ukraine faced Venezuela, who surprisingly upset Spain 2:1 with a late winning goal in the previous round.

The match in Tashkent saw Ukraine fire a few early shots on goal before taking the lead in the 5th minute, with Abakshyn converting Korsun's cross. However, Venezuela quickly equalized through Milton Francia.

Ukraine created multiple chances afterward, but Villalobos kept them at bay. Eventually, in the 14th minute, Chernyavskyi set up Shoturma for a goal, and soon after, Abakshyn scored his second after a rebound from Semenchenko's shot.

Venezuela responded immediately with two quick goals. Viamonte capitalized on Abakshyn’s mistake to score past Sukhov, and Vidal struck shortly after from a throw-in. In the 18th minute, Abakshyn hit the crossbar but made no mistake when gifted another opportunity, restoring Ukraine’s lead. Sukhov made crucial saves, and just before halftime, Shved made it 5:3, converting a pass from Shoturma.

At the start of the second half, Semenchenko extended Ukraine’s lead with an Abakshyn assist. Later, Sukhov, the Ukrainian goalkeeper, scored after a solo run. Venezuela began using a fifth field player, and in the 30th minute, Morillo cut the deficit. However, Chernyavskyi soon netted Ukraine’s eighth goal after a long pass from Sukhov, and in the 38th minute, Abakshyn intercepted the ball, allowing Mykytyuk to score into an empty net. Ukraine ultimately triumphed 9:4.

This victory marks the first time Ukraine has reached the Futsal World Cup semifinals since 1996. They will face Brazil on October 2 in Tashkent.
