Futsal World Cup 2024: Ukraine defeats Netherlands and advances to quarterfinals
In their fourth match of the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024, the Ukraine national team defeated Netherlands in the Round of 16.
During the group stage, our team initially lost to Argentina (1:7) but then triumphed over Angola (7:2) and Afghanistan (4:1). Finishing second in their group, the Blue and Yellows faced Netherlands, who secured second place in Group A. This opponent had already faced the Ukrainian team during the main qualifying round for the World Cup.

The match began in Tashkent with few chances, but in the 6th minute, our team took the lead through a combination of Korsun, Abakshyn, and Zvarych. The Dutch responded with a chance from Bukhari, who was denied by Sukhov. Later, Mykytyuk hit the crossbar with a free kick, and Ukraine missed several other opportunities. In the 16th minute, the opponents nearly equalized when Vaddukh combined with a teammate but struck the post.

At the start of the second half, our team had great chances — Korsun rattled the crossbar, and Chernyavskyi failed to score in a one-on-one situation. The Blue and Yellows defended well until the 29th minute when Bukhari broke down the left flank and assisted Bouzambu, who equalized the score.

Ukraine quickly regained the lead — Sukhov carried the ball over half the court, and Melnyk finished excellently. Later, the Blue and Yellows launched a superb counter-attack that miraculously didn’t result in a goal, along with several other chances from set pieces. In the final minutes, the Dutch played with a fifth field player but couldn’t score, while Melnyk managed to complete a brace.

Thus, Ukraine won 3:1 and will play in the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2012. They will meet the winner of the Spain vs. Venezuela match. The quarterfinal game will take place on September 29 in Tashkent.
