Futsal World Cup 2024. Ukraine defeats Afghanistan to reach Round of 16

In their third match of the Futsal World Cup 2024 final tournament, Ukraine's national futsal team secured a victory over Afghanistan and advanced to the Round of 16.

In the first round, the Blue and Yellows suffered a heavy defeat against Argentina (1:7), but then confidently beat Angola (7:2). Today in Andijan, Oleksandr Kosenko's squad faced tournament debutants Afghanistan, with both teams battling for second place in the group.

Ukraine started the game on the front foot. Early on, Abakshyn tested the goalkeeper, and later, Safari saved dangerous shots from Shved and Shoturma. In the 13th minute, after a brilliant attack and a shot by Zhuk, the post saved Afghanistan. However, shortly after, Abakshyn earned a penalty, which Zhuk converted. The lead was soon extended after a corner kick, with Zvarych's shot finding the net with a deflection off Abakshyn. Shoturma could have added another before the break, but his shot hit the post.

In the second half, Abakshyn hit the crossbar following a corner. In the 26th minute, Afghanistan reduced the deficit as Ghulami scored from a corner kick. The Asian team took the initiative, with Norowzi attempting a dangerous long-range shot. Ukraine responded with a chance from Shoturma, but Safari, with the help of the post, kept it out.

Later, Shved struck well from distance but missed the target. Afghanistan also wasted some opportunities. The tense ending of the match was broken when Zvarych scored from a distance after a throw-in by Semenchenko. Afghanistan switched to a flying goalkeeper, but Ukraine immediately punished them again — Abakshyn assisted Korsun, who hit the empty net.

As a result, Ukraine won 4:1 and finished second in Group C, advancing to the Round of 16. Oleksandr Kosenko's team will face Netherlands, who finished second in Group A. The match will take place on September 24 in Tashkent.
