Futsal World Cup 2024: Ukraine kicks off final tournament with a loss to Argentina
In their opening FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024 match, Ukraine took an early lead but ultimately fell to Argentina.
This marks Ukraine's sixth appearance in the history of the Futsal World Cup and their first since 2016. Today, Oleksandr Kosenko's squad kicked off the tournament in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, facing Argentina, the winner of the 2016 and runner-up in the 2021 World Cups.

Ukraine had an early chance in the 3rd minute, but Shved missed from a good position. Both teams then traded long-range attempts from Sukhov and Borruto, with the Ukrainian keeper making a few crucial saves to deny Argentina.

Midway through the first half, the game picked up speed with both sides exchanging attacks. On the 11th minute, Shoturma’s powerful shot was saved by Sarmiento, followed by dangerous efforts from Bolo Alemany and Semenchenko. Ukraine broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Chernyavskyi skillfully passed to Shoturma, who beat the keeper.

However, Argentina quickly responded, taking the lead before halftime. Ukraine committed too many fouls, and Arrieta converted a double-penalty. Moments later, Brandi flicked in a backheel to complete a well-executed team play, making it 2:1 at the break.
Right after halftime, Rosa extended Argentina's lead, assisted by Taborda, and nearly scored again, but Ukraine was saved by the post. Mykytyuk had a couple of off-target shots in response, while Sukhov denied Bolo Alemany’s one-on-one effort.

In the 30th minute, Borruto capitalized on a mistake by Sukhov in the center, making it 4:1. Shortly after, Arrieta completed his brace, tapping in at the far post. Ukraine switched to a fifth field player in a desperate attempt to get back into the game, but instead, Argentina scored two more times. The final score was 7:1.
Oleksandr Kosenko's team now turns their attention to the next group match against Angola, scheduled for September 18 in Tashkent.
