Olympics 2024: Ukraine's football campaign ends with defeat to Argentina

Today, on July 30, the Ukraine Olympic team played their third match in the 2024 Summer Games.

In previous matches, the Blue and Yellows lost to Iraq (1:2) and secured a win over Morocco (2:1). Before the final round, all four teams in Group B had three points each, so Ukraine's fate was decided in today's clash with Argentina in Lyon.

The South American team dominated the opening minutes, with Alvarez dangerously shooting over the crossbar. Ukraine responded with Batagov's blocked free-kick from Kryskiv's pass.

The game calmed down until just before halftime when both teams pushed forward. For Argentina, Alvarez shot near the near post, and Gondo intercepted the ball after a poor action by Fesyun, but after playing with a partner, he lost the duel to our keeper. Ukraine countered with excellent attacks, with Mykhailenko and Kryskiv's shots being blocked at the last moment, and Rubchynsky tested the goalkeeper from a distance.

Considering the events in the parallel match, only a win would suffice for our team. However, in the 47th minute, Argentina opened the scoring – Almada's powerful shot left Fesyun with no chance. Mascherano's team focused on maintaining the result while hoping for counterattacks.

Ukraine created a chance only in the 68th minute – Kryskiv tested Rulli from a distance. Then Krasnopir wasted an opportunity by shooting into the opponent after a superb pass from Fedor, and Otamendi blocked Ocherechko's attempt.

In stoppage time, the ball found our net again – Echeverri scored on the rebound. Ukraine responded with shots from Veleten and Ocherechko but failed to score even one goal. The defeat to Argentina means Ruslan Rotan's team finished third in the group and ended their campaign.
