The 2023 Hero of Ukraine Andriy Kizil Memorial Cup was held in Kyiv

The sixth edition of the football tournament for the Cup in memory of Hero of Ukraine Andriy Kizil concluded at the sports complex of the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum in Kyiv.

This year, the tournament gained all-Ukrainian status, and teams from the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum in Kyiv, the Naval Military Lyceum named after Vice Admiral Volodymyr Bezkoivan (Odessa), the Lviv State Military Lyceum named after Heroes of Kрут, the Volyn Oblast Military Lyceum named after Heroes of Heavenly Hundred, Kamianets-Podilskyi Lyceum and the Training-Rehabilitation Complex of the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum in Boyarka participated.

Among those who attended the ceremony preceding the decisive matches were Andriy Pavelko, Oleh Protsasov, Anatoliy Demianenko and Vadym Kostyuchenko.

“I am glad to be at the sixth edition of the Cup in memory of Hero of Ukraine Andriy Kizil, as the Football Association of Ukraine has been cooperating with the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum from the very beginning of these tournaments. This tournament gives cadets an opportunity to communicate with each other, play football and remember the heroism of all our soldiers who defend Ukraine against Russian aggressors,” said Andriy Pavelko, wishing the Kyiv military lyceum prosperity and its graduates success in football.

“Together with the Football Association of Ukraine, we did everything to honor Andriy Kizil’s feat, which will forever be part of our lyceum's history. We all together defend Ukraine from Russian aggressors. Freedom comes at a high price, but step by step we are moving towards victory. The boys and girls on the front line do the hardest work, while the entire hardworking, patriotic and brave Ukrainian people is bringing us closer to our common victory!” said Igor Gordiyuk, Hero of Ukraine and Major General who heads the lyceum.

Regarding the matches themselves, in the match for third place, the team of the Lviv State Military Lyceum named after Heroes of Kрут convincingly defeated representatives of the Naval Military Lyceum named after Vice Admiral Volodymyr Bezkoivan from Odessa — 4:1. In the final, which saw teams from the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum in Kyiv and the Volyn Oblast Military Lyceum named after Heroes of Heavenly Hundred, there was a twist. The fate of the match was decided by penalty kicks, with the Kyiv team emerging victorious (0-0 in regular time, 3-2 on penalties).

The leadership of the Ukrainian Football Association presented Igor Gordiyuk with a special award and banner. A special jersey from the national team United for Ukraine, featuring a unique image of Ukraine’s map with borders in the form of flags of countries supporting our country against Russian occupiers, was also sent to the lyceum's museum. The participants received football gifts from the UAF — balls and souvenirs.
