In their opening match, Yuriy Klymenko's squad faced Portugal. During the first period, the opposing side dominated, creating several dangerous chances. In the 5th minute, Portugal was awarded a penalty, but Ema missed the target. In other moments, Ukraine’s goalkeeper Anastasiya Terekh played superbly, or the Portuguese players simply lacked accuracy.

In the second 12-minute period, Ukraine’s first successful counterattack led to a goal. Margaryta Yurasova broke through on the left flank and beat the Portuguese keeper. Four minutes later, Yurasova assisted Yuliya Kostyuk, who fired into an empty net to make it 2:0. Unfortunately, just a minute later, Kostyuk received her second yellow card and was sent off.

The start of the final period was disastrous for Ukraine. Within two minutes, Marta scored twice to level the game at 2:2. Two minutes after that, Carolina put Portugal ahead. However, Ukraine found an equalizer through goalkeeper Anastasiya Terekh, who scored with a shot from her own half. In the end, it was Portugal who had the last word. Daniela secured the 4:3 victory for Portugal after a deflected shot left Ukraine helpless.

Ukraine’s next match in the tournament will be against Italy on September 12.
