At Tosh Proeski Arena in Skopje, the Italians played their first match under new coach Luciano Spalletti. The first half was an even battle, but the best chance to open the scoring belonged to the visitors. Sandro Tonali hit the crossbar from outside the penalty area at minute 21.

In the early stages of the second half, Ciro Immobile finally put Italy ahead, but on the 81st minute Enis Bardhi's successful penalty prevented "Squadra Azzurri" from avenging their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup — 1:1.
