President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, speaking about the importance of successes in defense against Russian aggression for the entire world and about developing a new fundamental security concept for our country.
"I wish good health to all dear Ukrainians!
Firstly, I want to thank our soldiers. Those who defend Ukraine's skies and those fighting on the front lines for Ukraine.
Our defenders of the sky - air force fighters and other troops involved in defending against missiles and "suicide" terrorists - are simply amazing these days! They inspire not only us but also our partners. Partners see what Ukrainians are capable of, what weapons handed to us can achieve, how effective we are when acting together for our common security.
Successes of Ukrainians in defending against Russian aggression - this is undoubtedly an antidote to other aggressions. The world must see that a free people can defend freedom from oppressors. If we can do it, others can too. If they act as courageously, as effectively and together with other free nations. I thank every soldier who gives Ukraine this result! Thank you to each partner who helps our soldiers precisely with the weapons needed for effectiveness!
Today, in particular, I would like to highlight the soldiers of the 96th Kyiv Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade. Over these and previous days - absolute heroes!
Of course, today, as always, I thank our units fighting on the most brutal fronts. Mariinka, Bakhmut, Avdiivka... I thank each one who defends Ukraine there with courage and resilience! Occupants have received new orders from their leaders to advance somewhere by a certain date. Well, this means only that despite any dates our heroes will continue to destroy the occupiers as they always do.
I chaired today's General Staff meeting. Reports were given by operational sector commanders, chiefs, and intelligence heads. By the way, Budanov and Litvinenko's reports were especially thorough and very relevant, and based on them we will take certain steps - steps that will strengthen our defense.
There were also briefings about preparing new units of ours, about supplying ammunition. I chaired a meeting with the minister responsible for strategic industries regarding ammunition supplies. There are good news in this regard. Of course, now is not the time to publicize them.
I also held several security meetings with government officials. The Prime Minister, First Vice Premier, Interior Minister and other ministers.
The first meeting - about demining in Ukraine. As of now, over 170 thousand square kilometers of our territory are contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance. Overall, this is estimated to take quite a long time - like decades to deal with such a threat. We need to do it much faster. We are preparing a special system of actions that will help demine new territories after de-occupation more quickly. We are actively working with partners to increase our capabilities. In terms of equipment, in training sappers and bomb disposal experts. With everyone around the world who has experience, technology, financial means for support, we will cooperate to make Ukraine clean again from Russian mines.
Another security meeting I held today - about developing a new fundamental security concept for Ukraine. We will comprehensively answer all national security questions. At legislative level, at government decision-making level, in specific practical matters. From border defense to new security conditions for school operations, from infrastructure foundations of economic security to the real possibility of guaranteeing our people such protection against terrorism as leading countries have. All this will be presented and implemented.
Today, May 8th, when the world recalls "Never again!", we in Ukraine give meaning to these words. Not just remembering but also defending. Not just valuing life but doing everything so that everyone who threatens life, everyone who carries aggression, everyone who resorts to terror against other peoples - every such evil loses.
I thank all those helping us defend life! Glory to all our soldiers fighting for Ukraine!
May victory over today's Russian fascism be the best tribute to those who fought and defeated Nazism!
Glory to Ukraine!"
