The Ukrainian Football Association participated in a meeting chaired by the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, Vadym Gutzeit, involving leaders and representatives of all sports federations as part of preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The first vice-president of the national football association, Vadim Kostyuchenko, attended the event to report on plans for preparing the Ukrainian team, which will play under the leadership of Ruslan Rotan at the football tournament at the 2024 Olympics.
Vadym Gutzeit thanked national sports associations for their unified and unwavering position regarding the impossibility of admitting Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions, emphasizing the strict adherence to the provisions of a decree by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine concerning the behavior norms for Ukrainian athletes in the event of participation by athletes from aggressor countries:
"I would like to thank the entire sports family for our fruitful cooperation on the international stage to prevent Russians and Belarusians from participating in European and world championships, and accordingly, at the Olympics. Thanks to our joint efforts, the aggressor countries did not receive an invitation to the Paris Olympics. Athletes from these countries will compete without flags or any symbols. I consulted with members of the executive committee, presidents of federations, leading athletes, and when the International Olympic Committee decided not to invite Russia and Belarus to the Olympics, a decree by the Ministry of Youth and Sports was changed to allow our athletes to participate in international competitions under certain conditions. I am sure you all saw Olha Harlan's act. This is one of the conditions of this decree. Our athletes should not shake hands with athletes from Russia and Belarus. The example set by Olha Harlan is very eloquent regarding how we should behave towards athletes whom we do not respect. At the same time, it is important that our athletes adhere to these norms, refrain from provocations by opponents, obtain licenses, and be represented at the Olympics."
"For the first time in years of independence, we have made it to the football tournament at the Olympics. The preparation of the team for this tournament will take place based on two teams—the Olympic and national, with leaders from the 'youth' squad already playing, which finished Euro-2023 in Romania and Georgia among the top four continental teams. The Ukrainian Football Association has received an invitation from the French Football Federation to participate in a friendly tournament with Olympic teams of other countries, scheduled for late May 2024 in Toulon. This is a great opportunity for our boys to prepare as well as possible for competitions at the highest level," — Vadim Kostyuchenko noted, adding that after the tournament, the team led by Ruslan Rotan will still have another training camp before the start of the Olympics.
