On January 29, Shakhtar Donetsk played their eighth match in the Champions League in Dortmund, Germany, in the newly formatted tournament.
In previous games, the Miners drew against Bologna (0:0), suffered defeats to Atalanta (0:3) and Arsenal (0:1), secured a victory over Young Boys (2:1), lost to PSV (2:3) and Bayern Munich (1:5), and defeated Brest (2:0).
On this occasion, under the management of Marino Pusic, Shakhtar visited Borussia Dortmund, and for the chance to advance to the knockout stages, they needed a victory and favorable results in other matches.
In the first half, the hosts had a significant advantage. Despite this, Shakhtar had an early chance, but Zubkov's shot was saved by Kobel. In the 17th minute, Borussia took the lead — Guirassy assisted Adeyemi for the goal. Schlotterbeck and Bynoe-Gittens failed to capitalize on their chances. However, before the break, Borussia doubled their advantage — Guirassy scored from a Brandt assist.
Just after the break, Riznyk made an excellent save to deny Guirasssy his third goal. In the 50th minute, Shakhtar pulled one back — Marlon punished Kobel for his mistake. Shortly after, Kevin burst into the box, but his shot was blocked.
Riznyk made another crucial save from Bensebaini’s header, then again won a duel against Guirassy. Guirassy missed another chance, but in the 79th minute, Borussia scored again — Bensebaini and Reina combined to beat Riznyk. As a result, Shakhtar lost 1:3 and ended their campaign in the tournament, finishing 27th in the league phase.
Shakhtar featured players from the national team who had been involved in the Nations League matches in November under coach Serhiy Rebrov: Riznyk, Matviyenko, Bondar, Sudakov, Kryskiv (substituted in the 89th minute), Zubkov (substituted in the 72nd minute).
