Champions League: Shakhtar falls short despite quick goal against Bayern
Today in Gelsenkirchen, Shakhtar Donetsk played their sixth match in the Champions League, which is being held in its updated format.
In previous games, the Miners drew against Bologna (0:0), suffered defeats to Atalanta (0:3) and Arsenal (0:1), secured a victory over Young Boys (2:1) and lost to PSV (2:3)
Today, their opponent was Bayern Munich. The first half of the match was extremely lively. Shakhtar opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute. Zubkov delivered a precise through ball to Kevin, who struck into the far corner — 1:0. However, six minutes later, Bayern equalized. Laimer picked up the ball in Shakhtar’s penalty area and fired under the crossbar from the right flank of the attack.
In the 44th minute, the nominal hosts had a fantastic opportunity to regain the lead, but Sudakov failed to capitalize on Kevin's excellent pass. Bayern immediately punished the miss. A minute later, Müller struck from the center of the box, sending the ball past Riznyk — 1:2.
The second half began with two chances for Shakhtar. First, Lassina Traoré took a fine shot from inside the box, but it deflected off a defender. A minute later, Bondar came inches short of beating Müller near the goal line. However, the momentum soon swung back to the visitors, and in the 70th minute, Bayern were awarded a penalty, which Olise converted without difficulty. Near the end, Musiala made the most of a scramble in Shakhtar’s box, and in stoppage time, Olise completed his brace. Final score: 1:5 — a heavy defeat for Marino Pušić's team.
Players from the Ukraine national team who featured in Serhiy Rebrov’s November Nations League matches appeared for Shakhtar: Riznyk, Matviyenko, Konoplya, Bondar, Sudakov, Kryskiv (subbed on in the 46th minute, yellow card), and Zubkov (assist, subbed off in the 83rd minute).
