U-19 Ukrainian Championship: Golden Season for Kyiv Dynamo

During the spring part of the season-2023/2024 in the Ukrainian U-19 championship, Igor Kostyuk's footballers managed to turn around a one-point deficit and an extra game in hand (which could have turned into a four-goal advantage) against "Shakhtar". After the winter break, "Dynamo" accumulated 34 points from 13 matches, while the miners collected 31 from 14.
Additional intrigue was added to the battle between the junior teams of the country's giants by an unexpected defeat of Kyivans against "Kolos" (2:3) in the 27th round. And in the next match, "Shakhtar" had to face "Dynamo", where everything would be decided.
In the decisive encounter, Oleksiy Belik's wards conceded a goal early on (Andriy Matveychuk scored in the second minute of injury time), gained numerical superiority on the field (Vladyslav Zakharchenko was sent off at the 50th minute), but then lost Nazar Balabu to an injury at the 57th minute, after which they could only narrow the deficit through Mykola Ogarkov's efforts — 1:2.
However, "Shakhtar" did not lose the championship title in the 28th round but earlier. Near the end of March, the juniors of the miners surprisingly conceded to an outsider, "Obolon" (1:2), and then shocked Ukrainian football with a humiliating defeat against "Vorskla" with a score of 2:7 in mid-April. Moreover, Shakhtar's second goal was scored already at the 90+3 minute...
Among the best teams in the Ukrainian U-19 championship during the spring part of the season-2023/2024 were also: "Kryvyi Rih" — 26 points, "Vorskla", "Kolos" — each with 23 points, "Polesye" — 22, "Metalist 1925" — 21, and "Veres" — 20.
On the other hand, "Dnipro-1" simply crumbled (15 points from 13 matches). Nevertheless, thanks to an earlier accumulated buffer, Dnipropetrovskians managed to retain their place in the top three at the season's end. And their head coach, Imad Ashur, despite the tournament failure, unexpectedly got a chance to showcase his ability to achieve results with senior players — in "Polesye".
