Today, on October 24th, the Ukraine U-17 national team (players born in 2006 or later) started their qualification campaign for Euro-2023 with a match against Azerbaijan. Their first group 2 game was played in Kakan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the «Mladost» stadium.

For most of the game, Ukraine had the upper hand, which they began to convert into goals as halftime approached. First, Ponomarenko scored a penalty kick earned by Pashok. Shortly after, he doubled his team's lead.

In the second half, Matvii completed a hat-trick. On the 59th minute, he successfully played on for a rebound during a corner kick, and at the 68th minute, he took advantage of a goalkeeper's mistake to score into an empty net.

After this, Ukraine relaxed somewhat and conceded two goals — Hussein Husseinov scored with a backheel after a set piece, while Murad Mammadov converted a penalty kick.

At the 90th minute, the blue-and-yellow team added their fifth goal — shortly after coming on as a substitute, Osypenko finished off a counterattack. In stoppage time, Azerbaijan hit the crossbar.

In summary, Ukraine's youth national team started their tournament with a victory — 5:2. Their next match will be against Liechtenstein on October 27th.
