On December 29, 1986, it was announced that Ukrainian footballer Igor Belanov had become the recipient of the most prestigious individual award in European and world football, the "Ballon d'Or" by France Football. In 1986, Kyiv's "Dynamo," one of whose leading players was Igor Belanov, won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup tournament.

On December 29, 1986, it was announced that Ukrainian footballer Igor Belanov had been awarded the most prestigious individual award in European and world football, the «Golden Ball», by the weekly France Football.
In 1986, Kyiv's «Dynamo», one of whose leading players was Igor Belanov, won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The forward also shone in the national team of the USSR at the World Cup in Mexico, notably scoring a hat-trick against Belgium.
Igor Belanov is one of three, along with Oleg Blokhin and Andriy Shevchenko, Ukrainian winners of the «Golden Ball». In 2020, by decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Igor Belanov was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V degree «for a significant personal contribution to the development and popularization of physical culture and sports in Ukraine, high sporting achievements, and long-term fruitful professional activity».
