Our team made history and qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2016. Preparation for this global event began in April when the blue-and-yellow team participated in a tournament in Jonava, Lithuania. There, they defeated the hosts, lost to Brazil, and played an evening match against France, securing third place.

In August, Ukraine's national team won a tournament in Portugal (Viseu). While victories over Costa Rica and Cuba raised no doubts, defeating the hosts, who were then reigning European and world champions, was particularly pleasing. The blue-and-yellow team continued their training process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, playing friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Libya.

Then our team traveled to Kazakhstan and from there to Uzbekistan, where the World Cup took place in September-October. In their group, Ukraine started with a loss to Argentina but then defeated Angola and Afghanistan, advancing to the knockout stage. In the round of 16, our boys beat the Netherlands, and in the quarter-finals they impressively eliminated Venezuela. In the semi-final, Ukraine gave a real fight to future World Cup champions Brazil, but unfortunately could not overcome them.

Despite this, in the match for third place, the team of Alexander Kosenko defeated France and won bronze medals at the World Cup. This was the first time our national team earned medals at a world championship. Additionally, Rostislav Semenchuk was named the third-best player of the tournament and received the "Bronze Ball." The second-top scorer of the tournament became Daniil Abakshin (seven goals), earning him the "Silver Boot."

After their triumph in Uzbekistan, the blue-and-yellow team switched to qualifying for Euro-2026. During preparation in November, they twice defeated the Czech Republic national team in away friendly matches in the town of Frydek-Mistek. In December, with two certain victories on the road against Cyprus and Romania, they started in Group 1 of the main qualifying round.

It is worth noting that in 2024, Ukraine's national team scored a total of 89 goals. Fourteen players contributed to this tally. The top scorer was Abakshin with 12 goals.
