September 5, fighters from the 12th brigade "Azov," including those who were released from captivity and those currently undergoing rehabilitation after injuries, attended a match of Ukraine's national team against France in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which took place in Wrocław, Poland at the "Tychy Arena Wrocław" stadium.

This trip was made possible thanks to the Ukrainian Football Association and its charitable foundation, which provided organizational and financial support so that defenders of Ukraine could feel the atmosphere of great sports and unity with their nation.

Among the guests were fighters from "Azov," known for their fanatical past and dedication to football.

One of them is Mykhailo Chaplya, nicknamed "Southern," a native of Kharkiv, an officer of "Azov," a defender of Mariupol and the protector of "Azovstal." He was sent into captivity by higher military-political command for over two years. For most of this time, he was in Taganrog where he endured torture and harsh treatment. His survival was helped by discipline, daily training, and humor as a way to not let his captors break him. After being released from captivity in September 2024, he is undergoing rehabilitation and actively participating in veteran initiatives.

In his address to the football players, coaches, and President of the UAF Andriy Shevchenko, Southern emphasized: "We have always united to support our national team. Despite being an active supporter of 'Metalist,' Andriy Shevchenko is a legend for me. When he played, I supported 'Dynamo.' And 'Milan,' as did the whole country. This unites us. Thank you all, thank each one of you. Life goes on and we do not stop."

During the meeting with the Ukraine national team, President of the UAF Andriy Shevchenko and head coach Serhiy Rebrov spoke to the Azov fighters, who signed souvenirs for them.

"This is the best motivation for the boys today to feel that commitment and belonging - it's us. We are one nation, one country. Boys, a big thank you for what you do! For footballers, this will be the best motivation today. To go out as a united front, as one country, as one family and work together. So I thank you all. Glory to Ukraine!" - said Andriy Shevchenko.

"We support you all as a team, those who defend our independence. That you came here means a lot to the players and gives them tremendous motivation before the game. I am sure that when you are at the stadium, the boys will feel this support," - noted Serhiy Rebrov.
