The Ukrainian U-19 team has qualified for the final stage of the European Championship for the first time since 2018 and can now hope for a successful continuation in the Euro-2024 cycle. After all, in four out of seven previous appearances at the finals, our footballers won medals. Let's recall how it happened.
At their debut European Championship in 2000 (then called Euro U-18, although players were 19 years old), Anatoliy Kroschenko’s team reached the final and lost to France — 0:1.
In 2009, on their home turf in Donetsk and Mariupol, Yuri Kalitvinets' squad came second in the group stage and advanced to the semifinals where they defeated Serbia (3:1), then beat England (2:0) in the final and won the European Championship!
Twice more our 19-year-old footballers took bronze medals, finishing in the semifinals — in 2004 and 2018. Both times this was enough to qualify for the World Cup U-20, where Ukraine's team won gold on their fourth attempt — in 2019!
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian U-19 (and later U-20) team achieved its greatest successes under Oleksandr Petrakov. With him, they twice qualified for the Euro finals and won bronze in 2018; with him, they played at two World Cups U-20 (2015 — quarterfinals, 2019 — gold).
