President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, speaking about the inevitability of holding accountable those responsible for war crimes against Ukrainians and about working on two fronts of our foreign policy — European and Euro-Atlantic.
"Dear Ukrainians,
A year ago, Russian troops committed one of the most horrific crimes of this war. Russian bombs destroyed a theater in Mariupol. A building that was being used as shelter. There were women with children, pregnant women, elderly people there. A civilian object deliberately destroyed by the occupier. We still do not know the exact number of casualties. Hundreds? Thousands?
Signs saying "Children" next to the building unequivocally testified that this was one of many targets for Russia. One among many such targets. The state responsible for each will be held accountable.
In mid-March last year, the occupier was still in the north of our country. In many places on Kharkiv territory. The enemy had completely different positions in the south. But we started pushing them back even then. There will come a day when we will free Mariupol. All of our south. All of our east. Just as we liberated other cities.
There will come a day when a tribunal will be established to restore justice for our people. A tribunal that will punish this aggressor just as previous aggressors were punished.
There will come a day when all those responsible for war crimes against Ukrainians will find themselves in the chambers of the International Criminal Court and national courts.
We will do all legal work. We will mobilize all partners needed for this. This is already being done. Every day we are getting closer to restoring justice for Ukraine. Every day we work towards it. The General Prosecutor's Office, Ukrainian law enforcement officers, special services, the government, diplomats, my office.
Racism will not remain unpunished. There will be punishment. And if anyone from the terrorists hopes to hide somewhere... It won't work.
Everyone who bombed Ukraine. Who burned our villages, who shelled Ukrainian cities. Mykolaiv, Kherson, Nikopol and Mariupol, Zaporizhzhia, cities in Donbas, Kharkiv, Kharkiv region. Everyone who carries out terrorist fire on communities in Chernihiv and Sumy regions. Everyone who brought war to Donetsk and Luhansk. Everyone who tried to annex Crimea. All Russians will be held accountable. They will answer for every Ukrainian life taken.
Eternal memory to all our people, adults and children, whose lives were taken by Russian terror!
Today I spoke with the British Prime Minister. Overall about how to strengthen our defense capabilities. As always, a very specific conversation, and I thank Rishi, I thank all Britons for their unwavering and attentive support. The results of the talks will be there. They will be in the hands of our soldiers.
Today I met with the Prime Minister of Latvia in Kyiv. Thanked him for a new defense package for our country, for principled support at all levels — from weapons to politics, from sanctions against Russia to legal issues.
We are consistently working on two fronts of our foreign policy — European and Euro-Atlantic. With all partners. With official and civic activists, with politicians and all other communities that have influence.
I thank Latvia for supporting Ukraine on both these paths. The EU and NATO. Today we spoke with Mr Prime Minister Kariņš about the relevant prospects of this year.
Ukraine has always been Europe. Ukraine will always be Europe. Russian bombs cannot change objective reality. Reality that is defended by Ukrainians.
I thank everyone who fights now under Marinka, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, in Luhansk region, on the southern front lines. I thank everyone who is teaching Russia that responsibility for evil is inevitable.
Paratroopers of "seventy-ninth" — thank you today too! 35th and 36th separate marine brigades — thank you, boys! Fighters of the 55th separate artillery brigade — well done! 74th separate reconnaissance battalion — thank you! I thank the National Guard soldiers who are fighting in the east together with all our defense forces. Battalion groups of the Central and Western Operational-Territorial Commands of the National Guard — thank you, boys! Zaporizhzhia direction: 128th separate mountain assault brigade and 44th separate artillery brigade — as always, well done! Kharkiv region: 3rd separate tank Iron Brigade, 1st separate special purpose brigade named after Bogun, 127th separate territorial defense brigade — thank you, soldiers!
Glory to everyone and every woman fighting for Ukraine now!
Thank you everyone who is bringing responsibility to the state of evil!
All of Ukraine will be free.
Glory to Ukraine!"
