In January, as part of preparations for Euro-2022, the blue and yellow team played two friendlies in Bucha against reigning European champions Spain. At the beginning of February, they had planned to play two away friendlies with Sweden, but the Swedish side canceled them because their national women's handball team went into quarantine.
After Russia's large-scale invasion began, UEFA rescheduled the final stage of Euro-2022, which was supposed to take place in Gondomar, Portugal, in March, for July. Due to Russian military forces' invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia's national teams and clubs from all competitions under their jurisdiction. As a result, the Russian women's handball team did not participate in Euro-2022's final tournament; instead, Hungary took part, securing second place in its group stage.
Due to the war, players of Ukraine's national team were forced to continue their careers abroad. Ahead of the final tournament of Euro-2022, our blue and yellow team held a one-month training camp that took place in San Marino, Italy, France, and Portugal. During this period, Ukrainian women played friendlies against teams from Italy and Portugal, as well as Italian "Banjolo" and French "Nantes Métropole."
At the beginning of July, Oleksandr Shaytanov's team lost to Spain in the Euro-2022 semifinals; however, they defeated Hungary 2–1 for third place and won bronze medals at the European Championship.
Since Euro-2022 was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our team immediately had to switch gears to qualify for Euro-2023. Ukraine started in the main round as hosts of their mini-tournament; however, because of Russia's aggression, UEFA moved the matches to Poland.
In October, the blue and yellow team held a training camp in the Polish city of Miedzyzdroje before moving on to Poznan, where the main round matches were played. There, Ukraine's national team defeated the Netherlands and Croatia and drew with Poland, which allowed our women to qualify for one of three European Championships among women. The final tournament will take place from March 16-19 next year in Debrecen, Hungary, where Ukraine will face Spain and Portugal.
In 2022, eleven players scored goals for the Ukrainian women's handball team, with Yuliia Titova being the top scorer with eight goals. By the way, this year she became an assistant to head coach Oleksandr Shaytanov.
