President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, speaking about the scale of enemy missile strikes on our country and the need for further assistance from Western partners.
"Ukrainians! Ukrainian women!
All our defenders!
Every day, when addressing our people, I emphasize how difficult and at what cost the defense against Russian aggression is. The occupiers are waging a very brutal war against us. Such a war has not been seen on the European continent for 77 years. A total war where the enemy tries to destroy as many people and infrastructure as possible.
The debris clearance operation in Desna, Chernihiv region, is complete. 87 dead. And this was only four missiles.
Since February 24, the Russian army has launched 1,474 missile strikes on Ukraine, using 2,275 different types of rockets. The overwhelming majority were aimed at civilian targets. In less than three months, there have already been over 3,000 air raids by Russian aircraft and helicopters. Which other country has endured such a scale of attacks?
Every time we talk to our partners about the need for modern anti-missile weapons and modern combat aviation, we are not just making a formal request. We are talking about how this request is about real lives that would have been saved if we had received all the arms we asked for.
By the way, today, while speaking with Davos Forum participants who started their work, I also talked about this. About the need to provide Ukraine with everything necessary to save our people's lives.
All of our partners agree that Ukraine's fight against Russia is a defense of shared values in all free countries. Our common freedom. And if so, we have the right to expect full and immediate assistance, primarily weapons.
Every one of my international talks, every address to parliaments or other foreign audiences necessarily touches on this topic.
And I am grateful to all those partners who help us by providing the necessary arms and ammunition to counteract that advantage, primarily in terms of quantity of equipment and weapons, which the Russian army has.
The most difficult combat situation now is on the Donbas front. Bakhmut, Popasna, Severodonetsk - at this axis, the occupiers have concentrated their greatest activity for now. They have set up a battle there and are trying to destroy everything living. Literally. No one has destroyed Donbas as much as they do right now.
And I am grateful to all our soldiers who hold positions and have the courage to counterattack.
Today in Kyiv, at Mariinsky Palace, in the White Hall of Heroes of Ukraine, I presented Orders "Golden Star". To soldiers as well as relatives of those heroes posthumously awarded this honor.
In particular, to Vitaliy Skakun's sister. He was a sapper with the 137th Separate Marine Infantry Battalion of the 35th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrogradskyi. He died while performing combat duties in southern Ukraine. Thanks to his bravery and heroism, it was possible to significantly slow down the enemy's advance and save hundreds of lives.
In this war - both since February 24th and since 2014 - marines have shown extraordinary courage. They were among those units that heroically defended Mariupol. They participated in many important battles.
And today, on Marine Infantry Day, I express sincere gratitude to everyone who is defending the country in these forces.
Russian occupiers are trying very hard to show that they will not give up occupied areas of Kharkiv region. They won't give up Kherson region, occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia region and Donbas. Somewhere they advance. Somewhere they pull in reserves. Somewhere they try to strengthen their positions.
The coming weeks will be difficult for the war. And we must realize this. But we have no alternative but to fight. Fight and win. Liberate our land and people. Because occupiers want to take everything from us, including the right to life for Ukrainians.
However, in order to win, each of us - every man and woman - must work towards this goal. Including those who are behind the front lines. Help the army. Defend the interests of our country on all international forums you have access to, in communication with foreign journalists, even just among your friends and acquaintances abroad. Every voice counts.
Today, as every day, I worked to increase pressure on Russia. Our representatives at Davos are working to get Ukraine more financial and humanitarian support. And for all our diplomats, the absolute priority is weapons and ammunition for Ukraine.
This evening I signed a decree awarding our soldiers. 161 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were honored with state awards. Of them, 42 posthumously.
Eternal memory to every one who gave their life for Ukraine!
Glory forever to all those bringing us closer to victory!
Glory to Ukraine!"
