President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation and reminded Russian aggressors of history's lessons, as well as what will be a victory for our country.
"Unbreakable people of the most courageous country in the world!
Today marks the third month of our war for our independence. The Russian-Ukrainian War. Three months already!
On February 24, most of the world did not believe that we would hold out more than a week. Some said — three days. A month ago, we had to convince various countries that betting on Ukraine was a winning strategy. And now... Now everyone knows this.
Thanks to the bravery and wisdom of our defenders, thanks to the courage of all Ukrainians, women and men alike, our country has become a true symbol of the fight for freedom. Everyone around the world — even those who do not support us openly — agree that it is in Ukraine where Europe's fate, global security, and the future of democratic systems are being decided. And above all, what will be the life in the center and on the eastern part of our continent.
Bucha, Borodyanka, Hostomel, Ohtyrka, Chernihiv and Sumy, Izium, Kharkiv, Volnovakha, Zolote, Severodonetsk, Rubizhne, Popasna and Mariupol... Rocket attacks on Odessa and Kramatorsk, Zhovtyniv, Lviv, Kremenchuk and Dnipro... Across all cities and communities of Ukraine… Russia has shown what it wants to bring Europe. What it can bring to Chisinau, Tbilisi, Helsinki, Vilnius, Warsaw, Prague, and other cities and countries that Russian state propagandists have long openly marked as enemies for Moscow.
Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine on multiple fronts. Missile strikes, air raids, artillery, tanks — everything! The Russian troops spared nothing. Means to kill us, Ukrainians and destroy our land.
In two months, they used over a thousand one hundred missiles against us, countless numbers of aerial bombs and artillery shells. They looted, robbed, executed. They mined our land. Turned peaceful cities and villages into hell. Part of Ukrainian cities and communities were destroyed to rubble. But nothing was achieved. And will not be.
Kherson, Kakhovka, Melitopol, Dniprorodne, Enerhodar and other cities that Russian occupiers temporarily entered have not surrendered to them. People showed their protest, their attitude towards the occupiers, proving that Ukraine will definitely win.
Russia wants to stage a fake «referendum» somewhere on our land? If they even try, it will be as disastrous as everything else they «came up with» in Moscow for the occupation of Ukraine.
Kharkiv region, Donetsk, Luhansk — nowhere did Russian troops see even a hint of support that they so heavily relied on. But they saw that this is an entirely different country. They saw that here are entirely different people. People who believe in themselves. Who believe in their country. Who respect others because they respect themselves. Who do not want to seize what belongs to others, but will not give anything of theirs. Who will defend every city, every street, every field.
In two months of combat operations, 9 thousand 781 defenders of Ukraine were awarded state honors. The title Hero of Ukraine was bestowed upon 142 of our defenders.
Ukrainians and Ukrainian women have shown truly mass readiness to defend Ukraine. Of any age, any social status, any education — Ukrainians and Ukrainian women equally stood up for the defense of their country.
This war has become truly national for Ukraine. And it showed that across our entire territory — from east to west, from north to south — the idea of Ukraine is equally strong, equally nationwide.
As of now, 931 populated areas have been deoccupied. Many cities and communities are still under temporary control of Russian army. But I have no doubts that this is just a matter of time before we free our land.
Russia can spend colossal resources to support the war. To withstand even the entire free world. Can take everything from its people that could develop Russia itself and direct this potential towards destroying the lives of neighbors.
But history's lessons are well known. If you want to build a thousand-year empire — you lose. If you want to destroy your neighbors — you lose. If you want to restore an old empire — you lose. And if you go against Ukrainians — you lose.
In two months, a global anti-war coalition was created. Sanctions against Russia have already been imposed that take away its future. Ukraine is receiving help from dozens of countries. This is support with weapons, finances, necessary goods, direct political support.
We are accelerating our movement towards the European Union as much as possible. We have already passed an historic moment, a crucial stage — with obtaining and filling out a special questionnaire that was given to each country before it gained candidate status for EU membership.
Already now, while the war is still ongoing, we are creating the necessary foundation for restoring Ukraine. This includes international agreements of various levels, as well as establishing special funds for rebuilding our state.
Already now, while Russia is still trying to occupy our territory, we demonstrate that we will give free Ukraine more opportunities for development than Russia can give not only the occupied part of our territory but also its own territory and its own country.
Obviously, every day — especially today, as the third month of our resistance begins — everyone in Ukraine is concerned about peace. About when this will all end. About what and when can be a victory for Ukraine.
To these questions there is both a simple and no simple answer at once. When victory comes, it will be felt by everyone. When peace arrives, it will be seen by everyone. But to make this happen — and sooner — we must think not about when and what it will be. We must think every day about how to make the presence of occupiers on our land even more unbearable.
Ukraine is ready for peace. Was ready then, when the war was going on in Donbas. Is ready now, with Russian invasion becoming full-scale.
But for Russia to seek peace, every Ukrainian and Ukrainian woman still have to fight. Have to defend freedom. Because each day of fighting today — is a plus of years and years of peaceful life after this war. After our victory.
As always before recording the address, I signed decrees awarding our heroes honors. State honors were awarded to another 269 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and nine servicemen of the Main Intelligence Directorate.
Eternal glory to all who stood up for their country!
Eternal gratitude to everyone who helps us hold out!
Eternal memory to each one who gave their life for Ukraine!
Glory to Ukraine!»
