The FIFA Council approved several key strategic principles related to the calendars of international tournaments and matches for both men's and women's football. This is reported on the official website of the International Federation of Football.
In particular, the next FIFA Club World Cup with 32 participating teams will start in June 2025. From now on, this tournament will be held every four years.
The windows for the international match calendar for 2025 will include one expanded window with four matches at the end of September and beginning of October to replace the current two separate windows in September and October, while other windows (November, March, and June) will remain unchanged.
To increase opportunities for teams from different confederations to play against each other, FIFA will initiate friendly tournaments — "World Series" — which will take place in the March window of even-numbered years.
The decision on hosting the 2030 World Cup will be made in 2024, and rules for submitting bids will be published at the beginning of next year.
As for women's football, the current structure of the international match calendar will remain unchanged until 2025, and hosts for the World Cups in 2027 and 2031 will be determined in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
Also, the creation of a new Women's Club World Cup, a new women's futsal world championship, and an expansion of the women's Olympic football tournament from 12 to 16 teams were approved.
Proposals for reviewing the list of FIFA youth tournaments, including expanding annual tournaments to 17 years old for both boys and girls, were also approved.
The FIFA Council appointed the Moroccan Football Association as organizer of the Club World Cup to be held from February 1 to 11, 2023, and also approved that the United Arab Emirates will host the 2023 Beach Soccer World Cup, while Seychelles will host the Beach World Cup in 2025.
