Kyiv Dynamo started the European campaign for Ukrainian clubs in the 2022/2023 season. Moreover, their match against Turkish Fenerbahçe in the second qualifying round of the Champions League was the first official game for representatives of the UPL since December 2021.
Due to Russian military aggression, Dynamo had to host the Istanbul team at the LKS Stadium in Łódź, Poland. By the way, this is where Ukraine's national team played their home matches in June.
In the first half, Fenerbahçe conducted more focused attacks and created more opportunities. For example, on the 14th minute, Bushchan saved his side from a header by Valencía. Shortly after, Yukşek shot from distance just wide of the post. The hosts had their best chance in the 27th minute when Verbitskiy failed to connect with Kędziora's cross. Later, Rossi tested Bushchan with an effort from outside the box. Soon after, Kahveci missed a close-range opportunity following a deflection – the ball landed safely in the arms of Dynamo’s goalkeeper.
In the second half, Mircea Lucescu's side looked much better. Popov, Sidorchuk, and Shaparenko all had attempts that went wide. On the 71st minute, Besedin had a good chance from inside the penalty area but his shot flew just past the post. Later, Brouma tested Bushchan with an effort – the goalkeeper was equal to it. In summary, the first leg of this Ukrainian-Turkish duel ended goalless.
Players who participated in the match included Dynamo players who were part of Ukraine's national team roster in June: Bushchan, Zabarnyi, Popov (substituted on 83rd minute), Sidorchuk (yellow card), Shaparenko, Tsygankov (substituted on 88th minute), Syrota (came on as a substitute on 83rd minute), Karavaev (came on as a substitute on 88th minute).
