U-15: Ukraine defeats Italy in penalty shootout at UEFA Development Tournament
On December 15, Ukraine's youngest national team, U-15 (players born no earlier than 2010), continued its campaign at the UEFA Development Tournament in Portugal. The matches are being held at the Lisbon Cidade do Futebol sports complex.
Dmytro Mykhailenko’s team opened the tournament with a 0:3 loss to Portugal and faced their peers from Italy today.
The Blue and Yellows started strong, and in the 9th minute, Bodak opened the scoring with a shot into the far corner after turning at the edge of the box. Italy responded by hitting the post. Later Bodak and Osmukhin missed their attempts. In the 30th minute, Squadra Azzurra equalized — Croci earned and converted a penalty. The Italians were more active before the break, while Ukraine managed to score, but the goal was ruled offside.
In the second half, Italy missed several chances early on, and in the 56th minute, Ukraine struck again — Donyk entered the penalty area and passed to Bodak, who secured his brace. The Italians soon responded when Donner successfully finished a counterattack.
Both sides exchanged dangerous attacks, creating chances near both goals. Ukraine managed to score again — Rotar delivered a brilliant through ball during a counterattack, and Savchenko beat the goalkeeper. However, moments later, Italy leveled the match again as Donner made it 3:3.
Under tournament rules, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Ukraine triumphed 4:3.
The Blue and Yellows will play their final match of the tournament against Turkiye on December 18 (kickoff at 13:00 Kyiv time).
