Oleksandr Kosenko: "It's great that we showed character. This is crucial for our future"
The head coach of the Ukraine futsal team, Oleksandr Kosenko, commented on the victory in the Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup 2024 in Uzbekistan against Netherlands (3:1) and their advancement to the quarter-finals. His remarks were reported by the press service of the Futsal Association of Ukraine.
— For the first time in many years, we will play in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. How would you evaluate your team's performance? Did everything go as planned? Can we say this match was the most intense of the entire tournament?
— It was a very responsible match. Perhaps it wasn't the most spectacular, but it was extremely tense. I thank the guys for withstanding the pressure of the World Cup. It was very difficult. The Netherlands is an incredibly strong and good team, but it’s great that we showed character. This is crucial for our future.
— Ukraine scored first in this match. Then, you conceded a goal and immediately responded with one of your own. How psychologically important was it to withstand after conceding that goal?
— For us, it was really important. In previous matches, after conceding a goal, we immediately dropped in performance and either conceded more or allowed moments near our goal. But it's very good that today we withstood that blow. It's important for both the result and our team's future.
Additionally, the Ukraine team will play in the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 2012. They will face the winner of the Spain vs. Venezuela match. The quarter-final will take place on September 29 in Tashkent.
