Since 2013, the Center for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE) has invited representatives from both amateur and professional sports to join annual events focusing on accessibility and inclusivity, which highlight the important role played by people with disabilities in football as well as society at large.
The CAFE Action Week is the largest event that allows fans with disabilities and para-fan clubs, clubs, stadiums, leagues, national associations, NPOs, and all those interested in accessibility and inclusivity to come together to promote initiatives for equal opportunities #TotalAccess.
Within this event, the Ukrainian Football Association has taken the initiative to introduce the public to interesting personalities.
"I work as an audio describer for blind and visually impaired fans," says Lubomyr Pokotilo to the press service of the UAF. "For 13 years now, I have been trying to provide a complete description of what is happening on football fields in Ukraine and around the world to my audience. I can't recall the exact number of matches I've covered, but it's well over a hundred.
The most memorable match was the first official game of the national team at European championships on 'Olympic' Stadium in Kyiv on June 11, 2012. The unforgettable atmosphere among fans, the duel between two great modern-day masters—Andriy Shevchenko and Zlatan Ibrahimović, their goals, and our team's victory—2:1 (our leader scored twice).
Another vivid memory is the Champions League match between Kyiv 'Dynamo' and Turkish 'Beşiktaş', where Dynamo crushed their opponent with a score of 6:0. However, on that day, several thousand Turks were the main troublemakers at NSK 'Olympic', throwing objects at our fans, setting things on fire—behaving like savages—and all this had to be described...
Working with people with disabilities is familiar to me as I graduated from Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Social Policy and Social Work, and learned the technique of audio description in Kyiv, Warsaw, and London. Since childhood, I have been passionate about football and supported Kyiv 'Dynamo', but during commentary, there are no favorites—only events on the field and among fans.
Prior to Euro 2012 in Ukraine, a team of audio describers was prepared, but unfortunately, life has made its adjustments. First came COVID-19, then full-scale Russian occupation took people off stadium stands. So today, the format of football match audio description has changed: we conduct it on waves of Internet radio for blind listeners 'Homer'.
On one hand, I would like to return to the stadium, but reality is such that some fans have left their homes, others are abroad. In this case, a radio format is an optimal option for listeners. And especially important is audio description for injured fans who are undergoing rehabilitation in Ukraine or abroad and have the opportunity to listen to matches."
