President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, speaking about negotiations regarding new security agreements for our country and a good result in relations with the European Union.
"I wish health to all dear Ukrainians!
We are concluding this day, this week, it is time to sum up the first results of this January — for Ukraine and for our relations with partners.
Despite various challenges and many difficulties, Ukraine has managed to maintain international attention on our fight for independence. We have added more resilience to our country — precisely what is a key argument in international communication. What you are capable of. What you can endure. What you can go through. The world pays attention to the steadfast and brave.
Firstly, we signed an ambitious security agreement with the United Kingdom this month. This is now a factual benchmark — there is something to aspire to in working with other partners. And negotiations are ongoing about new security agreements — not just with European countries — regarding bilateral documents for implementing the G7 Security Declaration. I am confident that soon we will see new results concerning security guarantees for Ukraine. Thankful to all our partners who help.
Secondly, this month our teams from Ukraine and Poland have recharged relations. We understand each other well, we have clear benchmarks — what is important for our societies, for our security interests. And by the way, Poland has joined the G7 Security Declaration, a total of 32 countries are now working with us in this direction.
Thirdly, there is a good result in relations with the European Union. The substantive preparation for starting negotiations — the process of screening Ukrainian legislation — has begun. This is an official assessment of Ukrainian legal acts against EU law. There is already understanding of the meeting schedule and all subsequent necessary steps. It is important that Ukraine's government team be sufficiently mobilized for this work — Ukraine is interested in maximum results in relations with Europe this year, as much as possible.
Fourthly, I am grateful to Switzerland for very good, productive talks during my visit and for the effective organization of the meeting on the Peace Formula. There are agreements also regarding organizing the first Leaders' Peace Summit in Switzerland. Very active contacts are ongoing about this. Indeed a strong story — we are preparing it.
Fifthly, defense packages for Ukraine. We have had a decent dynamic over the month. Of course, we need more to achieve air control and greater capabilities on land, especially artillery. But no matter how difficult it was for us, we have supplies of artillery, rockets, and ammunition for air defense systems. I thank every country that supports our soldiers, protecting Ukrainian lives. Already hundreds of Russian missiles and drones were shot down this month. And we continue working with partners. We await a corresponding decision from the United States — it is critically important.
I thank each country that announced new support packages at the recent Ramstein meeting, which was nine support packages — and some of them are items in short supply for our defense. We are already preparing more agreements with partners for February.
And separately I want to highlight the results of communication with partners regarding Russian assets: this month we have come closer to a decision that is needed, which will be fair. All Russian assets — assets of the state terrorist itself and those associated with it — wherever they are frozen in various jurisdictions, must work for protection against Russian aggression as well. They should be confiscated. And we are doing everything so that this decision can be meaningfully prepared soon. I thank everyone who helps us advance this mechanism of justice restoration.
And of course, sanctions. A new EU sanctions package is needed, and we are preparing it. We are also preparing new steps to limit Russia's ability to circumvent sanctions.
Every pressure on Russia — this is a step towards peace. Every help for Ukraine — this is protection of life. I am grateful to everyone who stands with Ukraine! Thank you all who fight and work for our country, our independence, our people!
Glory to Ukraine!"
