Dnipro Donetsk 'Shakhtar' in the Europa League playoff round reply match defeated French 'Rennes' on penalties and advanced to the Round of 16.
A week ago, the miners won in Warsaw against Rennes with a score of 2:1. Now, however, Igor Jovinevich's charges played the return match in France. It should be noted that one of the heroes of the first game, Kryskiv, did not make it into Shakhtar's lineup, being replaced by Topalov.
The start of the meeting was marked by attacks from the hosts, and Trubin had to save after shots from Guirri, Spencer, and Truffert. Later, the miners withdrew the game from their goalposts, and on the 22nd minute they even scored, but Traore's goal was annulled for handball by Bondarenko. On the 28th minute Maier shot wide, and afterwards both teams created few dangerous moments.
After halftime, Rennes managed to open the score — on the 52nd minute in a counterattack Guirri passed into the penalty area for Toko Ekambi who outplayed Trubin. Kaliumendo-Muinya could have scored soon after but his shot was blocked by Bondar.
The miners responded on the 66th minute when Mandanda parried a shot from Konoply after Topalov's cross. Later, Truffert missed from the penalty spot. Towards the end of regular time Shakhtar could have secured an important draw but Sikan failed to convert Zubkov’s cross. Shortly thereafter Truffert had another dangerous attempt near the goal line, and Trubin saved a shot from Taiat outside the penalty area.
The game went into extra time where the hosts had the upper hand. Thus, on the 102nd minute Trubin saved Guirri's shot after a turn. And at the start of the second extra period Rennes scored — Dokou after a cross to the right flank found himself in the penalty area and crossed it for Salah.
However, Shakhtar managed to equalize in the duel. On the 119th minute after Jurasek's cross Beulochan sliced the ball into his own goal. The score of 2-1 in favor of Rennes meant a penalty shootout.
In the football lottery Trubin saved three penalties from opponents, and the decisive 11-meter shot was converted by debutant miner Celsi — 5:4 in favor of Ukrainians. Thus orange-and-black advanced to the Round of 16 of the Europa League, whose draw will take place on February 24 (kickoff at 13:00 Kyiv time).
In the lineup Shakhtar included players who were called up for the last national team training camp: Trubin, Bondar (yellow card), Matviyenko (yellow card), Mykhailichenko (yellow card), Stepanenko (substituted in 100th minute), Zubkov (substituted in 112nd minute).
