President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, speaking about the respect for Ukrainians who fought and defeated Nazism during World War II and about the inevitability of driving out the Russians from our land.
"Good evening, warriors of light!
Energetic people, always charged for battle! The 246th day is coming to an end.
We continue our resistance. The aggressor continues his terror. We are once again attacked from the sky by their flock of drones.
In just two days, over 30 drones were launched. Defenders of our skies did not allow the enemy's drones to break through deep into the country and shot down 23 "Shaheds." In addition, a guided air missile X-59 was turned into scrap metal, as well as two attack helicopters Ka-52 and another Su-25 ground attack aircraft. Overall during this period, Russia carried out more than 4,500 rocket strikes and over 8,000 aerial sorties. But we are fighting, and we will shoot down even more.
I thank the sentinels of our skies.
Also, I thank everyone who joined the fundraising for "hunters" of such "Shaheds." Alone on the U24 platform, this is 665 thousand people from 70 countries around the world. Together we will inevitably cut the wings of all metal monsters flying towards Ukraine. Enemy planes will fall. Enemy helicopters will fall. "Shaheds" will fall. Only the Ukrainian nation will not fall! A heroic nation that will surely enter world history.
Actually, just like this day. It is already history. The clock has passed midnight. On the calendar it's October 28th. Every year on this day we commemorate the liberation of Ukraine from Nazi occupiers. We pay tribute to Ukrainians who fought and defeated Nazism during World War II. Today we do this, holding weapons rather than flowers in our hands. Today preserving the memory of the feats of our ancestors means defending their achievements. We remember the expulsion of Nazis as we approach the expulsion of Russians.
Evil that seemed to be finally defeated and burned down in 1945, eighty years later is reviving from ashes. It's standing on its feet. It's becoming possible. How did this happen? Unnoticed. And very quickly. Like one day changes another. Instantly. A new day and a new evil come instantly. In that same moment when the world doesn't notice. Some are sleepy, some are deeply asleep. Someone pays no attention. Someone gives no significance. All in all everyone is silent and think alike: it won't touch me. War is far away somewhere. Somewhere in Transnistria. This is Moldovans' trouble. Somewhere in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is Georgians' trouble. Somewhere in Crimea and Donbas. This is Ukrainians' trouble. It will bypass us. It won't hit us. Unfortunately, as a result, it becomes everyone's trouble.
Early or late memories of the terrible war become a terrible reality. Neighbor becomes an aggressor. Aggressor becomes a terrorist. And Nazism becomes an example to follow. It can come in new attire, with new slogans, but with the same goal. Unfortunately, we know this not from books. We know how evil can invade your home in the last century and eight years and eight months ago. To break Western borders or come from the north, east, and annexed Crimea. Bombing peaceful cities with cluster bombs or cruise missiles.
Replacing DniproGES or seizing Zaporizhzhia AES. Dropping bombs despite a red cross or "Children" sign. Seizing grain under the "Hunger Plan" or creating a threat of famine for the entire planet. Kidnapping and exporting people. Kidnapping and exporting children.
The form of evil has changed, but its essence remains unchanged. Evil always starts the same way. Oppressors call themselves liberators. The invasion of their army is self-defense. Just as 80 years ago, the Ukrainian people take up arms to defend their homeland. And the enemy's blitzkrieg plan becomes a failure.
Evil always acts the same way. It kills civilian populations while claiming it only targets military objects. Sets up blockades and filtration camps. And Syrets becomes Olenivka. Destroys cities and villages. And Kryukovo becomes Bucha.
But sooner or later, war crimes become known. The world's reaction becomes painful. Appeasement policy turns into a harsh counteraction.
The position of evil becomes a zugzwang.
So evil always ends the same way. Occupier becomes a capitulator. Oppressor - a fugitive. War criminals become defendants, aggression - a verdict. Destruction turns into reparations. Enemy technology becomes museum exhibits. Grandfathers' feats turn into grandchildren's victories.
The day of Ukraine's liberation from Nazis on the 247th day of our struggle becomes a symbol: the result of our struggle will inevitably be the liberation of our Ukraine. Occupied territory will become free. It was always like this in the past, and it will surely be so in the future. In the future Kherson, Donbas, Luhansk, Crimea. For our land is always freed. Resistance becomes pride. Struggle becomes victory. And Ukraine becomes united!
Today Russia's sole tactic is terror. The only possible outcome of such a tactic will be defeat. Terror has become proof of their weakness and a test for our resilience.
We are not broken by shelling. Worse than enemy rockets in our skies is hearing the enemy anthem on our land. Darkness won't scare us.
The darkest hours for us do not lack light, but freedom. Our military - strong, volunteers - tireless, partners - reliable, and people - unbreakable.
The world's second army will become smaller. The enemy's losses will grow larger. I am confident that their propaganda does not work, provocations do not act, threats do not scare. No harsh winter will scare us either. We know that the darkest night becomes dawn.
We know that all occupiers flee our land in the same way. Gauleiters and self-appointed "governors" end up the same.
Reich Commissariats and quasi-republics die the same way. And in all of our cities, our flags will inevitably fly. And Ju-87 Stukas and kamikaze drones fall the same way. And in our skies there will inevitably be our birds, our missiles, our "Dream"!
Glory to everyone who fought against Nazism during World War II! Glory to all those fighting for Ukraine today!
Glory to our nation that will enter history!
Glory to Ukraine!»
