The national team of Ukraine overcame Scotland's resistance in Glasgow (3:1) and will play the 2022 World Cup qualification playoff final against Wales. Head coach Oleksandr Petrakov shared his impressions from the game.
— What emotions are you feeling now? What do they mean to you?
— There are no emotions left now, they stayed on the football field. This victory means a lot for our country.
— It was expected that Ukraine's national team would put in great effort to win. Many were surprised by how well-organized and united you played. What can you say about this?
— Thank you very much for the assessment of our work. Football is a team game, it's my players who made all the effort to win. We need to thank them all. I think now everyone in Ukraine, every soldier in trenches, barracks, hospitals, and every supporter is thanking and applauding. First and foremost, this is the boys' victory.
— What would you like to wish those people who are fighting for Ukraine's freedom right now?
— We played today for them. I told the boys before they went out on the field that we play football for ordinary people, for our country, for supporters, and for those who have suffered. We made a small step — advancing to the final. Ahead of us is a game against Wales. I can say that we will do everything within our power. Today we pleased people. We are proud to be Ukrainians and to promote our country in difficult times.
I would like to thank Scotland for their hospitality. They received us very well. I walked the streets of Glasgow, people approached me wishing success. I wish their team and head coach Steve Clarke all the best.
— Are you satisfied with your boys' physical condition? Are you satisfied with Artem Dovbyk's actions, who scored a goal but missed two decent opportunities?
— I don't want to analyze the game right now. People who work in football will understand me. Right now is not the time for that. I said I was satisfied with how the boys played, and we'll do the analysis later. I'm empty now, drained. Please forgive me, but I won't be analyzing the game right now.
— Ahead of you is a match against Wales. Will there be enough time to prepare for this opponent?
— According to our plans, we will fly to Cardiff tomorrow at 11:30 am. We have training in two groups in the evening. Further, there will be more training sessions, preparation, and recovery for the boys.
— I would like to hear a few words about our legend, Andriy Yarmolenko, who has already scored 45 goals for Ukraine's national team.
— Do you mean that he is already old (smiling)? He feels good and is still young. He will continue to play and progress...
— Oleksandr Zinchenko was very emotional at the pre-match press conference. How did he manage to concentrate on the game to become one of the team's leaders?
— Zinchenko is a very patriotic boy, he feels everything deeply. He is an honest Ukrainian. All our boys are like that. Some hold back, others can't contain themselves. God forbid, may such grief never come to anyone's land. Until it touches you and your family, you don't understand it. We have lost so many people — women, children... What Sasha said is sincere, from the heart...
