In their opening match at Euro-2025 (U-21), Ukraine's youth team lost to Denmark (2:3). After the game, coach Unai Melgosa spoke with the press.
— What are your impressions of the match?
— We played well in the first half, the team was compact and solid, which resulted in a goal. After halftime, the Danes started to play better, but we also had many chances to score. However, we lost some rhythm and initiative, allowing our opponents to turn things around. Unfortunately, we quickly fell behind after the score became 2:1. Our opponent was somewhat lucky with a ricochet. Of course, I am disappointed with the final result because we did not deserve to lose.
— Could you have been tired both physically and mentally at the end?
— I don't think the team was exhausted. The players naturally felt fatigue as this is the end of the season, which we understand. But they tried to play for a win, and in the final minutes had an opportunity to equalize. Both the players and I wanted to win this match.
— Did you expect there would be five goals and such open play?
— Of course, we did not expect that. We want our team to score as many goals as possible while conceding as few as possible. But it happened the way it did. We will analyze this in the coming days.
Recall that Unai Melgosa's charges will play their next match on Sunday, June 15 against Finland. This game will take place in Košice and start at 7 PM.
