Ukraine U-19 set to launch EURO 2024 journey against Northern Ireland today
Today, July 15, the final tournament of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship begins in Northern Ireland. Among the eight participants is the youth team of Ukraine (players born in 2005 or later).
Our team's opening match against the hosts will occur in Larne at Inver Park. The game is set to start at 19:00 local time (21:00 Kyiv time). Our group also includes Norway and Italy, while the other group features Denmark, Turkey, France, and Spain.
“Our goal is to reach the top four teams. We hope for this and will do everything possible to advance as far as we can,” said our youth team's head coach, Dmytro Mykhailenko, at a press conference ahead of the match. “I’m sure there will be pressure in the opening match and fans in the stands. Regardless of which part of Great Britain the teams are playing in, they are fiercely supported. There will be whistles and shouts, and we must be ready for that. We also need to be prepared for any external circumstances, such as wind and the fact that Northern Ireland players will be highly motivated. We must respond with calmness when we have the ball and be aggressive when needed, pressing in every area of the field and being confident in ourselves and our game. Every player feels the responsibility and importance of the opening match in tournaments like the European Championship.”
Additionally, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. On July 28, the main trophy will be contested at Windsor Park in Belfast. There is no match for third place, but a fifth-place match will take place, as five representatives will qualify Europe for the U-20 World Cup in 2025, which will be held in Chile with 24 teams participating. Thus, the winner of the match between the third-placed teams will join the four semifinalists.
