General Information

As of April 2024, Romania held the 46th place in FIFA's official ranking. The national team played its first match in history on June 8, 1922 against Yugoslavia (1:2), and achieved its greatest victory on October 14, 1973 over Finland (9:0). Its worst defeat was suffered from Hungary on June 6, 1948 (0:9). The team is known by the nicknames "Tricolors," "Yellow Ones," and "Carpathian Boys."

The Romanian national team reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1994 and the quarter-finals of the European Championship in 2000.

Main Coach

45-year-old Romanian specialist Edward Georgeanu has been coaching the national team since January 2022. He replaced Adam Nawalka.

Previously, he worked with "Steaua," "Vaslui," "Fortuna Brașov," "CFR Cluj," "Gaz Metan," and Sofia's CSKA. Under his leadership, the Romanian national team played 24 matches, winning nine times, drawing nine times, and losing six.

Leader

The undisputed leader of Romania's national team today is midfielder Nicolae Stanču of Chinese "Wuhan," who also captains the team.

At 31, Stanču has played 70 matches for his country, scoring 14 goals. In his career, he has played for Romanian teams "Unirea," "Vaslui," and "Steaua," Belgian team "Anderlecht," Saudi Arabian team "Al-Ahli," Czech team "Slavia," and Chinese team "Wuhan."

With "Steaua," he won the Romanian league twice (2013/2014, 2014/2015), once each — the Romanian Cup (2014/2015) and the Romanian Super Cup (2013). With "Anderlecht," he became champion of Belgium (2016/2017) and won the UEFA Super Cup (2020). With Prague's "Slavia," he won two titles as Czech league champions (2019/2020, 2020/2021).

The match between Romania and Ukraine will take place on June 17 in Munich at the Arena Munich (kick-off — 4 PM).
