The Ukrainian women's national team returned from Greece, where they played two matches in the 2023/2024 Women’s Nations League against local footballers. In the first match, the blue and yellow team lost (1:2), but managed to take revenge in the second one (1:0).
In a comment on the official website of the UAF, head coach Vladimir Pyatenko's assistant explained what prevented our team from achieving maximum results:
— We went to Greece for victories. I believe that we did not deserve to lose in the first match, but unlike the hosts, we failed to convert our game advantage into goals. Moreover, there were individual defensive mistakes which also affected the final result.
— What did you focus on during preparation for the second match?
— First of all, we had to make sure that they didn't fall into a psychological rut. Because in previous losses against Poland and Serbia, the team deserved better luck. The girls came out onto the field prepared to break their losing streak.
As for tactical nuances, it was necessary to complicate things for opponents on the flanks, improve ball control in the defensive zone. Our team managed this, and we won.
— The earned three points still keep our national team's chances of advancing to League A alive, but now everything depends not only on us. In the next round, we need not only to definitely beat Poland, but also for Serbia not to take the upper hand over Greece…
— We have already calculated everything and will fight until the end. Against Poland we will play on December 1st. We will gather on November 26th right after the final of the Ukrainian Cup and head to a neighboring country. On December 5th, there is a scheduled match against Serbia at home. Without rotation in the lineup won't be possible this time either. I hope that several players who couldn't help us due to injuries will recover in time.
